Start-up to Success with Workspace Barossa: A Real-life Guide for The Regional Business Compass

In July 2019, Shelley Cox, an ex-winemaker, and Sam, a computer programmer took a plunge into the unknown. In an endeavour to connect lonely consultants, remote workers and start-up businesses, their brainchild Workspace Barossa emerged as the region's first-ever co-working space.

This family-driven venture faced the challenges of early morning International Zooms for co-working software research, outlaying thousands of dollaroos for a marketing strategy (which didn't really help in the end, it only confirmed what Shelley already knew!), designing and project managing the space refit on a tight - AND WE MEAN TIGHT - budget, and taking care of the two little kidlets in between!

In their quest to build a community within a community, embarking on something entirely novel wasn't without its challenges. The initial phase was all about picking up the phone, reaching out to local businesses, and explaining the myriad of benefits a shared space could offer.

It was an educational journey, introducing the true value that co-working spaces could bring to the traditional town of Tanunda and Barossa Valley and wider region.

What were your challenges of starting from scratch?

“We understood the importance of not just creating a physical space but a supportive community. Through these experiences, we learned the power of personal connections and the impact a warm, inviting space can have on productivity and collaboration.”

Funding was another significant challenge. Sam and Shelley initially focussed on what MUST be done to open the doors, and prioritised - this helped to ensure the profitable improvements were made first - and the 'nice to have' were completed when possible.

What have been your biggest lessons?

As Workspace Barossa was just finding its feet - after 8 short months - Covid hit.

Flexibility and adaptability became a cornerstone. Learning that a co-working space is more than just desks and chairs, Shelley and Sam evolved their services to include online workshops, community events, and tailored support. The lesson learned was that adaptability is not just a survival skill but a key driver of success.

“As soon as Covid hit, it was a bloody big blow. I felt that communication - and plenty of it - from our business was imperative to not only share the news and restrictions as they were happening, but helping to interpret what they meant for the small and micro-businesses we supported. There were so many people who had their 2020 dreams ripped out from under them, not just us!

How have you measured your success?

“In 2021 we also gave birth to our third child - so we haven't had time to stop and think! However I believe Workspace Barossa emerged from these challenges stronger and more vibrant. The lessons we've learnt from the initial struggles have become the pillars on which the space stands - be flexible, authentic & supportive - and just #DoGoodThings.

What ways have you implemented changes - or learnt from mistakes?

“Every mistake is a learning opportunity! I've had some really hard lessons to learn, in a very challenging environment at times - and I constantly find myself in Reflect - Review - Adapt mode! Whether it is listening to the community at our Meet Your Neighbours get togethers, or from enquiries about workshop topics, I am asking for feedback and reviewing our offering.

The Journey Continues

The success of Workspace Barossa became a catalyst for the birth of The Regional Business Compass, a program designed to guide and support regional businesses facing similar challenges.

It's a testament to the belief that success is not just personal but something to be shared and nurtured within the community.

As Workspace Barossa thrives, the journey is far from over. Shelley, Sam, and the Workspace community continue to learn, adapt, and inspire. The co-working space stands as a testament to the power of community, flexibility, and the entrepreneurial spirit.

Whether you're a business owner, a remote worker, or an entrepreneur, Workspace Barossa invites you to join the journey. Discover not just a workspace but a community that thrives on shared successes and the spirit of doing good things together.
