Reflecting on Your Business: A Simple Way to Celebrate Growth
Dec 19, 2024Running a small business is a whirlwind.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and forget to take a step back and reflect.
But here’s the thing—pausing to look at how far you’ve come is one of the most powerful ways to grow, improve, and even give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back. Gosh, if you want, you can even give yourself a little treat or a gold star!!
Let’s talk about why reflecting on your business matters and how you can make it part of your routine. Spoiler: It doesn’t have to be complicated!
Why Reflection is a Game-Changer
You’ll Learn From Experience
Ever made a decision that worked out brilliantly—or not so much? Reflection helps you unpack what led to those outcomes so you can keep doing what works and skip the rest.
You’ll Spot New Opportunities
Looking back often reveals things you might have missed in the moment. Maybe there’s a trend in customer feedback or a gap in the market waiting for you to fill.
You’ll Simplify The Way We Work
Noticed a task that always feels clunky or takes too long? Reflecting on workflows can help you simplify and save time.
You’ll Build Confidence
When you take stock of what you’ve accomplished, you realise just how much you’ve achieved. That’s a powerful motivator to keep going. This was something I regularly did while operating our co-working space in the Barossa, Workspace Barossa. At least each year I would go through the highlight reel and just remind myself of all the weekends, late nights and planning that went into creating a community hub from the ground up!
What Successful Entrepreneurs Have to Say
You’re not alone in this. Some of the most well-known entrepreneurs swear by the power of reflection:
“Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. It’s the fuel that keeps you going.” – Lisa Messenger, CollectiveHub [www.collectivehub.com]
“Stay curious, keep learning, and never stop growing.” – Emma Welsh, Emma and Tom’s [www.emmaandtoms.com.au]
If it works for them, it can work for you too! The Collective Hub have some fabulous prompts and daily reminder tools to help you jot down your thoughts and reflections on the go!
How to Make Business Reflection Work for You
- Set Aside Time
Find a moment each week or month to reflect. Maybe it’s over coffee on a Monday morning or as part of your Friday wind-down. Building this into your routine will provide vital insights and fuel your confidence.
- Ask Simple Questions
Start with things like:
- What went well this week?
- What didn’t work as planned?
- What could I tweak to make things easier or better?
- Write It Down
A notebook, a phone app, or even sticky notes—whatever works! Recording your thoughts helps you track patterns over time.
- Celebrate Wins (Big or Small)
Sold your first product? Nailed a tricky task? Celebrate it! These moments fuel your confidence and remind you why you started in the first place. Sharing in groups like our Small Biz, Big Hearts Community [https://www.facebook.com/share/g/15ddiDtpws/] can help get your success out there, but also inspire others to reflect on how far they’ve come!
Your Challenge for This Week
Take 15 minutes to reflect on your business. Write down one thing that’s working well, one thing to improve, and one small step to try next.
Reflection doesn’t need to be fancy—it just needs to happen. You’ve come further than you think, and by taking a moment to look back, you’ll be even better prepared to move forward.
Let’s keep growing, one step at a time!
