The Art of Reflection for Small Business Owners
Feb 06, 2025
As we step into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the highs, lows, and lessons learned over the past five or six years in business.
It’s no secret that the road as a small or micro business owner can be bumpy, filled with unexpected turns and plenty of moments where it feels like the wheels might fall off.
But reflection—and the ability to adapt—are what keep us moving forward.
This past Christmas holiday period marked a significant shift for me personally. For the first time in years, I was able to truly enjoy the break with my kids at home. No looming overheads from a co-working space, no retail shop or online store to manage—it felt lighter, freer. Yet, it also served as a stark reminder of how unsustainable things had been in the past.
I’d been running my previous businesses (through Covid + pregnancy at 40 btw) in a way that wasn’t sustainable for the long term. Like many small business owners, I’d fallen into the trap of "just keep going"—focusing on the immediate tasks and day-to-day grind without stopping to reassess or plan for the bigger picture.
This shift didn’t happen by accident. It came thanks to the guidance and support of people like Laura and Kat, who helped me focus on what truly matters and what will move the needle for both me and The Regional Collective in 2025.
Reflecting on Sustainability
For many of us in regional business, the past few years have been about survival. The challenges of operating in small or remote areas, compounded by global uncertainty and rising cost of living expenses, have tested even the most resilient entrepreneurs.
But survival isn’t the goal—thriving is.
I realised I couldn’t just power through indefinitely. The way I’d been working wasn’t aligned with the kind of life I wanted to create for myself, my family, and my business. Taking the time to slow down and reflect has been transformative.
Sharing the Journey
This year, I’m more passionate than ever about sharing these insights and lessons with you. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be to step back, celebrate your wins, and create space to reflect on what’s working—and what’s not.
That’s why I’m so excited about the launch My Business Compass online, self-paced course. This program has been built to help regional small and micro business owners, like you, pause, reflect, and create a sustainable roadmap for your business.
Whether it’s identifying what truly matters, setting achievable goals, or finding better ways to operate, this course is about making things simpler, clearer, and more aligned with your values. Because I love being a small business owner - but I don’t want to be a martyr to the cause!!
Collaboration Is Key
I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s been part of this journey. Whether you’ve joined one of our webinars, participated in our events, put your hand up to be a Regional Guide or supported The Regional Collective in any way—your encouragement and collaboration mean everything. It’s a privilege to work alongside so many incredible small business owners and collaborators who are doing amazing things in their communities.
Looking Ahead
As we head into 2025, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on your own journey. What worked for you last year? What didn’t? What would you like to do differently this year?
Here’s to celebrating the wins—big and small—and focusing on what truly matters. Let’s make 2025 a year of clarity, purpose, and growth, both in business and life.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to connect, collaborate, and support your journey. Whether it’s through My Business Compass course, workshop or simply sharing stories and ideas, let’s make this year one to remember.
