The Power of Partnerships

Why Collaborative Efforts are Essential for Mainstreet Success

I loved delving into why our ‘mainstreets’ are so important and how we’re all responsible for their existence and vibrancy. Whether it’s the small business owners, market stallholders on weekends, or the patrons who choose to support their local favourites, we all play a role. Of course, councils and business development groups also facilitate and lead the direction of our mainstreets.

During the Mainstreet SA conference, Bjorn Bergman, from the Swedish Association of Towns and Cities, shared fascinating insights from Bryant Park in New York and The Little Square in Malmö. He emphasised that revitalising these spaces isn’t the result of one person’s effort, but a collaborative and inspired project—a key takeaway we can apply to our own mainstreets.

The Role of Councils and Community Leaders:

Councils and community leaders are crucial in spearheading efforts to enhance mainstreets. As Bergman discussed, it’s about creating spaces that people love to spend time in. But it’s not just the responsibility of councils—it’s about how they can lead partnerships with small businesses and local stakeholders. This is where the magic happens. Just look at projects like Norwood Parade and Unley Road, where the councils have actively supported businesses to create vibrant, bustling streets.

Small Business Involvement:

Small businesses are the lifeblood of our mainstreets, but they need meaningful support. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it is for small business owners to balance operations while also trying to make an impact on the street level. As Gianna Murphy, CEO of Renew Adelaide, pointed out, new startups and small businesses need the right infrastructure and mentorship to truly thrive, which ultimately benefits the entire community.

The Importance of Shared Vision:

Effective partnerships rely on a shared vision—one that business owners, councils, and communities work toward together. With Bjorn’s example of The Little Square in Malmö, it was clear that this collective effort brings long-lasting, vibrant results.

Mainstreet success hinges on partnerships. Councils, business owners, and local leaders must unite under a common goal to create spaces where businesses and communities thrive. As I reflect on the Mainstreet SA conference, it’s clearer than ever that these collaborative efforts are the key to vibrant, successful mainstreets.
